Uniqlo Sues Shein Over Alleged Copycat Bag

Japanese retailer Uniqlo has filed a lawsuit against rival company Shein over a small shoulder bag that they claim is an unlawful copy of their popular “Mary Poppins bag.” The bag in question, Uniqlo’s Round Mini Shoulder Bag, is a hit product known for being roomy, light, and compact. It has gained popularity on social media platforms, including TikTok, and is often referred to as the “Mary Poppins bag” due to its versatile and spacious nature.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Tokyo District Court, demands that Shein stop selling its product, which Uniqlo alleges is too similar in appearance to their own. Uniqlo is seeking damages of approximately 160 million yen ($1.1 million) from Shein’s parent companies, Roadget Business Pte, Fashion Choice Pte, and Shein Japan Co.

According to Uniqlo, Shein’s product is a copyright violation and of inferior quality, which undermines customer confidence in the Uniqlo brand. They argue that the similarities between the two bags are substantial enough to cause confusion among consumers and unfairly capitalize on the reputation of Uniqlo’s product.

The Round Mini Shoulder Bag, available in various colors and priced at 1,500 yen in Japan and $19.90 in the US, is known for its durable and water-resistant design, as well as its inner pockets. Uniqlo operates nearly 2,500 stores in 26 global markets and is known for its affordable and casual clothing, including popular items like HeatTech thermal underwear.

Shein, on the other hand, is a fast-fashion retailer founded in China and currently based in Singapore. It has gained significant traction among consumers, particularly through its app, by using digital technology to respond to customer tastes and minimize waste.

In response to the lawsuit, Shein stated that it respects the intellectual property rights of others and takes claims of infringement seriously. The company is currently looking into the allegations made by Uniqlo.

This legal battle is a reminder of the ongoing challenges around intellectual property rights and the protection of original designs in the fashion industry. As the case unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the courts address the allegations and whether Shein will be required to cease the sale of the disputed product.

The outcome of this lawsuit could have significant implications for both Uniqlo and Shein, impacting their respective brands and the wider fashion industry. As the case progresses, it will undoubtedly draw attention to the importance of intellectual property protection and the need for fair competition within the retail sector.
