Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles unveiled the district’s budget plan for the upcoming academic year, shedding light on the financial challenges that lie ahead.

As reported by KTRK, for the 2024-2025 school year, some schools within the Houston Independent School District will receive increased funding and additional programs. However, campuses experiencing a decline in enrollment will see a reduction in funds allocated to them.

The district is grappling with financial difficulties, a trend that is projected to continue in the coming year. Factors contributing to this financial strain include diminishing enrollment numbers, reduced federal funding, and stagnant state funding levels.

Superintendent Mike Miles expressed concern about the district’s financial outlook, highlighting the possibility of the rainy day fund running low if significant changes are not made.

To address some of these challenges, HISD plans to support 130 specialized “New Education System” schools by providing extra stipends to teachers and administrators. Additionally, funding for magnet programs will remain unchanged.

Funding for non-New Education System schools will be contingent on factors such as enrollment and attendance rates for the current academic year.

Miles reassured stakeholders that there are no plans to close schools in the upcoming year, emphasizing the importance of investing in improving instructional quality and programming before considering closures.

In a bid to enhance academic outcomes, HISD will extend the school year by eight days and implement a $2,500 salary increase for teachers. However, Miles mentioned that additional cuts will be made at the district’s central headquarters to help balance the budget.

Public input will be sought through several meetings leading up to the final budget approval in June. The district’s board of managers is scheduled to convene for approval on Thursday, providing an opportunity for public comment.
