The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating an incident that occurred early Sunday morning, resulting in the shooting and killing of a man by deputies. The tragic event took place on the I-45 feeder road near Pruitt Road around 3 a.m.
According to Captain Tim Holifield, the incident began when the driver failed to immediately stop for deputies who were attempting a routine traffic stop. Eventually, the driver pulled over at the scene of an unrelated crash. As a deputy was getting out of his patrol car, the driver suddenly threw his vehicle into reverse, slamming into the deputy’s car and knocking the deputy to the ground. In response, deputies opened fire, striking the driver.
The driver received initial treatment at the scene before being transported to a hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The deputy who was knocked to the ground was also taken to the hospital for treatment but has since been released. Another deputy at the scene was unharmed during the incident.
Sheriff Rand Henderson expressed concern over the rising number of officer-involved shootings, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of law enforcement officers. He commended the deputies for their bravery and quick response, noting that they were able to return home to their families after the incident.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office collaborating with the Texas Rangers and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office to gather all relevant information and determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
