Spencer Wells, a native of Pearland, Texas, and a University of Houston graduate, is set to showcase his talent on the hit TV show “American Idol.” The 24-year-old former football player turned singer will be competing for a chance to win a golden ticket to Hollywood.

Wells credits his musical abilities to his father, who played the piano and exposed him to music at a young age. Despite growing up around music, Wells didn’t realize he had a talent for singing until high school when his dad encouraged him to join the school’s pop show choir. From there, he started taking music more seriously and honing his vocal skills.

After graduating from Dawson High School, where his father was his football coach, Wells went on to play tight end for the Houston Cougars for three years. While pursuing his passion for sports, his teammates and coaches encouraged him to pursue a career in music due to his undeniable talent.

Wells’ journey to “American Idol” began unexpectedly when he entered a karaoke competition at a local bar. A judge affiliated with the show noticed his talent and helped him secure an audition. Despite feeling nervous and anxious, Wells described the audition experience as surreal and rewarding.

As a newcomer to the music industry, Wells draws inspiration from a variety of genres and artists, including country, R&B, old soul, and Christian gospel music. He hopes to continue growing as an artist and finding his voice in the music world.

Fans can tune in to “American Idol” on Sunday at 7 p.m. on ABC13 to see if Wells receives the coveted golden ticket. Regardless of the outcome, Wells is grateful for the opportunity to showcase his talent on a national platform and is excited to see where his musical journey takes him next.
