The community of Humble, Texas is still reeling from the tragic loss of 18-year-old Jarvon Coles, a bright and talented student-athlete at North Shore High School. Jarvon, an honors student and football player, had big plans for his future, intending to pursue his passion for football at Lamar University. However, his promising life was cut short when he was shot and killed at a house party.
Last Saturday, hundreds gathered to pay their last respects to Jarvon at Light of the World Christian Fellowship Church. The outpouring of love and support for Jarvon was palpable, with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston Mayor John Whitmire declaring March 16 as “Jarvon Coles Day.” Family, friends, pastors, teammates, and community members all shared stories of Jarvon’s infectious smile, leadership qualities, and deep commitment to his family, education, community, and football.
As loved ones remembered the impact that Jarvon had in his short life, they also called for justice for his untimely death. Pastor Joseph Bailey urged those responsible for Jarvon’s death to come forward and take responsibility for their actions. Jarvon’s father, Jarvis Payne, echoed this sentiment, urging anyone with information to do the right thing and come clean.
In addition to the local and state recognition of Jarvon’s life, NFL quarterback and Houston native Jalen Hurts sent a heartfelt video message to the family. Despite the show of support, the investigation into Jarvon’s death is ongoing, with authorities still working to find the person responsible for this senseless tragedy.
Jarvon Coles may have been taken from this world too soon, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him. His legacy as a dedicated student, a talented athlete, and a compassionate member of his community will continue to inspire others to live their lives with passion and purpose. May he rest in peace.
